The Sand Canyon Fire Safe Council utilizes a localized General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) network as a primary communication tool during critical incidents, including wildfires, power outages, and cellular network failures. GMRS enables direct, reliable, neighbor-to-neighbor communication across designated canyon zones when traditional infrastructure goes offline. We also maintain a multi-channel repeater system that covers the entire canyon plus the surrounding area.

Neighborhood Resilience: Allows Zone Leaders and residents to share real-time updates on conditions, evacuations, and resource needs across Sand Canyon.

Superior Range & Clarity: Operates on higher power levels (up to 50W for mobiles/base stations and 5W for handhelds) compared to standard FRS radios, with repeater capability to push signals over hills and steep terrain.

Monthly Net Drills: Regular radio drills are conducted to test equipment function, maintain battery readiness, and reinforce proper radio protocol and clear-text communication.

Simple Family Licensing: A single FCC GMRS license requires no test, costs $35, covers the licensee’s entire immediate family for 10 years, and provides legal authorization across all 30 GMRS channels.
